Sneijder is the Netherlands most-capped player with 133 appearances and his signing is something of a coup for the Qatari league and Al Gharafa, who sit in mid-table with just 11 points from 11 games.

The news of his transfer was broken on the official handle of Al Gharafa which read, "Breaking: We are delighted to announce that Wesley Sneijder will join Al Gharafa Sports Club".

Sneijder, a 33-year-old attacking midfielder, underwent a medical examination in Doha and is expected to be presented to the media in the coming days.

The ageing star is following into the footsteps of Barcelona icon Xavi Hernandez, who also moved to the gulf nation to play football in the twilight of his career.

In order to achieve that, they will have to defeat Uzbekistan's Pakhtakor in the qualifying playoffs on January 30. He won the Serie A title, the Italian Cup and the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2010 with Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan.

"It's great news for the Qatar Stars League", Xavi said.

Sneijder is expected to play his first match with Al Gharafa next Friday against Al Ahli in round 12.

Sneijder will now call former Chile international Luis Jimenez and ex-Manchester City and Rangers winger Vladimir Weiss teammates.
