Contrast Nixon's numbers with President Trump's. "With 58 percent in, we are projecting that he is the winner tonight". As the Supreme Court has explained, legislators "represent people, not trees or acres".

Tens of millions of Americans are passionately for Trump, and tens of millions are passionately against him.

Michael Reagan is the son of President Ronald Reagan and a political consultan. Someone, I presume a supporter of the challenger, replied that President Donald Trump had no government experience either. Incumbent Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe remains widely popular, as do the state's two Democratic senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine.

The discontent on display in U.S. politics in recent years isn't subsiding.

And he condemned the national anthem protests by NFL players, the vast majority of them black.

Sabato told us previously that voters and candidates have increasingly moved away from centrist voting habits that dominated the 1970s through 1990s.

Facing this choice, Sens. Hallelujah, people, and let's do it again next year. Other Republicans may follow.

That's why you will frequently read about the huge sums Dominion, Virginia's biggest utility, gives to political candidates. Embedded in that diagnosis, however, is a warning for Republican lawmakers that continued inaction could be disastrous. In 1982, Ronald Reagan sustained a 27-seat loss. "And whichever position he takes - for or against - he's going to lose votes". Perhaps the most stunning result came in Prince William County, a Washington exurb, where Danica Roem became the first openly transgender member of the state legislature - defeating Del.
